bobbin wont thread correctly?

i have an old kenmore model 385-17881. my mother in law gave it to me and the only thing ive been able to find wrong with it is she never took care of it and it was filthy and needed to be oiled. well my grandma has been teaching me to sew and even she cant figure out whats going on. for some reason the bobbin doesnt like to always thread. somehow my husband always gets it to thread but when i do exactly what he did it doesnt thread. ive checked everything. the needle is correct and in correctly, the bobbin is in right and it sometimes picks up the thread and then other times it just knots up under the needle plate and jams. and then sometimes it just says no and doesnt form that loop that picked up the bobbin thread. the needle just goes up and down and doesnt do anything. first time my grandma and i worked with this machine we just put the bobbin in and started sewing and it worked perfect. then we went to change to a different bobbin to get a different color and we started having issues.

so it was sitting for a long period of time and was dirty. Did you take it in for a tune up? It worth the money to get it completely checked over and tuned up after not being used
make sure you have a new needle in the machine
thread the machine with the pressure foot UP
Make sure you are catching the bobbin thread on the tension
Pull the bobbin thread up by holding the upper thread and manually turning the hand wheel. (the pressure foot is still up) This will lower the needle, it should pick up the bobbin thread. Pull the bobbin thread and upper thread behind your needle. Put in your fabric, lower the pressure foot- Hold on to these "tails" for the first few stitches.
