I will be staying in Phuket town (instead of any other tourist / beach area).

My guide would be to use the travel desk in my hotel, unless changing my hotel later. Using that facility usually puts the hotel somewhat responsible for good service. That is, the hotel then has some reason for you to have a good experience from a company located inside their lobby, for example.
