我們在地球上用電子秤量度出來的其實是重量,​​那質量要怎麼量度呢??

Mass is measured by a beam balance. The object of unknown mass is placed on a pan at one side of the balance lever, and standard masses are added on the pan at the other side. When the lever is in balance, the mass of the object equals to the standard masses on the other pan.

Before beam balance measurement is based on comparing masses, it is not affected by variation in gravity.

方法1:
把地球上電子秤量重量 除 9.81 ms^-2 = 質量

方法2:
固定要量度的質量, 以勻加速衝向量度力的量度儀, 按Newton's Second Law, 求出質量 (方法 2 是目前太空人在太空中量度質量的方法)

按 Newton's Second Law, 在勻加速情況下

F = ma
Force = mass x acceleration
力 = (質量)(加速度)

電子秤量度的重量是按照上述公式演算

W = mg
Weight = mass x acceleration due to gravity
重量 = (質量)(因地球地心吸力引起的加速度)

因為地球地心吸力引起的加速度, 為常數約 = 9.81 ms^-2
所以把地球上電子秤量重量 除 9.81 ms^-2, 可求出 質量

相同道理, 於方法2, 量度力的量度儀,會知道 力 (Force) 的多少,
並以勻加速 (Constant acceleration) 衝向量度力的量度儀,
按 F = ma, 可求出 質量
