One thing I noticed in Paris is that very few Parisians speak English. I know that I was in their country, but many of the French act worldly and sophisticated, and many of them learn English in school, but when I was in Paris, almost no one understood English. In addition, many of the Arab immigrants in France did not speak French. Another thing I noticed in Paris was that the cab drivers would often "refuse" to accept passengers. In Paris and other French cities you can only catch a cab in a designated area, but just because you wait at a cab stop, that doesn't mean that the cab driver will allow you into his cab. Maybe this behavior is considered normal in France, but in the U.S. it would be extremely rude.

They just hate when Americans come and expect them to speak English. Kind of understandable. If you ever go to France and someone says they don't speak English, they probably do. French people just don't like to speak it unless absolutely necessary.

The whole rude thing really applies to Parisians, though, as it applies to most major cities in the world (New Yorkers, Londoners, Sydneyers.) In rural north France they absolutely ADORE Americans, still thankful for us liberating from the Nazis in the 1940s. Ditto for South France, Paris is really the only place you'd run into any anti-American (or anti-English speaking, lol) sentiment. But you're also a lot more likely to run into someone who genuinely doesn't speak English in rural France, most people in Paris can.

I think... I THINK... that they treat people who can't speak French the same way Americans treat those who can only speak Spanish.

When someone put it in those words I immediately understood where they would be coming from if that is the case.

I mean, that's just gut-reaction when someone can't speak your language, but are there anyway.

It may not be NICE, but it is a common way people react.

So, just try your best to speak French. I hear that that gesture usually changes their nature.

No, they were really nice and helpful to me when I was in France! It's just a silly stereotype :P

I've never found that. But then I can speak French. If you go to any country and shout at the locals in a language they don't understand very well, don't expect a warm reception.

It is called a stereotype. There may be a few like that, but there will be in every country you visit.

I've known a number of people who have been to Paris. Unless you know French the locals won't speak to you, yet 95% of them know English.
My brother was lost there once and only wanted directions to his hotel. None of the French would help and finally a German tourist said "they won't speak with you, but I will help if I can".

The taxi drivers, hotel staff and tourist attraction employees will speak with you, but that's only because it's their job to do so.

Yes they are. They like insulting people, calling them "imbeciles", etc.

I've been told the same thing but I believe don't judge unless you have seen with your eyes.
