1a) Most oxygen atoms contain 8 electrons , 8 neutrons and 8 protons . State the atomic number and the mass number of these atoms.

Atomic number = number of protons in the nucleus, atomic number = 8

Mass number = number of protons + number of neutrons
= 8+8=16

1b) A few oxygen atoms contain 8 electrons , 10 neutrons and 8 protons . State the atomic number and the mass number of these atoms .

atomic number = 8
mass number = 8+10 = 18

1c) What word describes the relationship between these two types of oxygen atoms?

isotopes
