Correct use of tenses?

Someone wrote "John failed the exam."

I answered " If my information is/was correct, it is/was because he did not study hard"

Which be verb is correct?

If I answered "It is/ was because he did not study hard" "Is" or " was" should be used?

Although John failed the test in the past, this does not mean that you are only relying on information that was true in the past only. You are basing your response on information that you believe to be true right now so "is" would be the better choice in this situation.

"is" in both places.
