If I online-purchase goods on Ebay from USA to UK, how to avoid tax? Do I even have to pay it?

I have purchased a lot things online from abroad.
Sometimes, it arrives straightly. However, sometimes I have to pay a tax first in order to receive my goods. So what exactly the policy is when it comes to online shopping?
I am going to purchase something expensive on ebay shipped from USA, I just don't want to pay the tax..
Is there any way to avoid it?

You pay VAT on everything you buy within Europe.

If you buy from outside (so the seller did not add VAT), it gets added by HMRC when the item is brought in to the country.

There is a threshold below which VAT is not charged but it does not seen very consistent - anything from £10 to £25 may be ignored. I have had VAT on a £10 cd..

Any attempt to avoid paying the VAT is considered fraud, and as it's against the government the penalties can be very serious.

You just have to see what happens when the package arrives in the UK.

If they are expensive you pay VAT and customs duty when they reach UK. If they are cheap (£10 or less) you get them free of tax and customs duty.

No, you can choose not to pay the tax but then you forfeit the goods, customs don't send things back, they are not a postal service.

No, import duty is chargeable.
