Aside from a small number of plants, all content in the free-to-play sequel will be fully playable without spending money.

Four plants from the original - Squash, Jalapeno, Snow Pea, Torchwood - as well as the new Power Lily, which spawns a new currency named plant food, must be purchased with real currency to unlock.

As well as standalone purchases, each will be available as part of bundles with coins and upgrades, such as a bonus plant slot or additional starting sunlight.

Plants Vs Zombies 2 will introduce themed worlds, each with a map screen that allows players to easily access stages and explore optional branching paths.

Branching paths will be unlocked with keys, which are collected as random drops or purchased as an in-app purchase, which lead to additional plant unlocks or mini-games.

"It taps into the way we hope to monetise on the game," Murray explained.

"We're asking you to do more of what we hope you wanted to do anyway, which was play Plants Vs Zombies," he added.

As well as new plant and zombie types, Plants Vs Zombies 2 will introduce plant food, a new currency that is randomly dropped or purchased, that boosts the skill of a plant for a short period of time.

For example, Sunflowers will drop additional sun, while Peashooters will turn into a Gatling Pea temporarily.

There are also touch-enabled power-ups which will also allow you to pinch the heads from zombies or move them around the map, which was described as being ideal for dispatching zombies near ledges.

While Murray assures that the tempo is "very very similar" to the original, the new features allow players to become "more engaged".
