what waves are out there? (non physical)?

is there a wave that's slow enough for a normal computer to sense the difference? and that it is a non-physical wave ( ie, em waves, sonic waves)
i want to build a distance sensor that senses about the distance of an arm apart (using pings on a regular interval), what kind of waves would work for it?
