need a coating i can put over wood to give it smoother look and be able to paint.please help!!?

so i have these hand made bean bag box sets,they are made well but parts of them have big chips and chunks mising from the kids being to ruff with them.i will not sand them down,some of chips are to deep anyways.i really would like something i can cover the box with because the wood is like a ply wood and never has a smooth finish look after i paint them.so basically i need to be able to cover the whole box with something that will have a smooth finish and can be painted after.please help me!!!!! is there anything out there like this that????and where can i find it and how much????

You can use sanding sealer, after which you sand the wood to smooth it out. You sand before, apply the sealer, sand again, then paint. If you want really smooth wood, you must sand it. There is no coating you can apply that will make a smooth surface on wood that isn't smooth.
