Camera Lenses and accessories for Nikon D3100?

I received a Nikon D3100 for my birthday this year and I want to get the best use out of it. I just plan on taking photos as a hobby and at events but am looking at buying a new lens for it, possibly for night time use as the camera does not take great photos in low light. I currently only have the 18-55mm lens. I've heard that the 50mm 1.4G is the lens to get but as I know almost nothing about camera, I wanted a few opinions. Any ideas on what I need to buy for better quality photos?

Okay first, the D3100 is an excellent camera, you have many great years ahead! Invest into lenses and learn, and as you can see the 50mm f/1.4 is something you already like, but also consider the much cheaper, but highly similar, 50mm f/1.8G! And the 35mm f/1.8 in case you'd like something slightly wider.

Simply put, you just need a camera with any lens to get great quality, but buy stuff when you really know why you need them. Tripods, flashes, these are all great but not many know how to use them properly.

Low light shooting would need a high ISO value and a large aperture lens.

I'm not sure how high your camera's ISO goes but you heard it right with the 50mm f/1.4. The lower the f/number, the better for low light, the more exponentially expensive the lens becomes.

Here's another thing. Low f/numbers are almost exclusive to non-zooming lenses. The lowest zoom lenses go is f/2.8. The lowest telephoto lenses go, even when they do not zoom, is also f/2.8. If you want to capture action at the middle of the football field in very poor lighting during nighttime, you're out of luck.

Here's how to look at lenses properly that may hopefully help you decide on what to spend your money on wisely.

Picture quality depends mostly on user skill. The camera and lenses are only tools. To take better pictures, learn photography.

A good tripod should be higher on the list than a wide aperture lens.

it's always good to have a good range of f-aperture; find one that has a higher zoom; but for me 20X is always good enough;
find one that has f2.5 - f16~20
20x zoom;
this depends on you; but i always find myself not having enough focal close up; so this depends on you
