How the hell do I get my Xbox 360 controller to work on Left 4 Dead 2 (PC)?

Like, this is stupid. I check the controller in the control panel and it's working fine, I even put on a different game and it worked on there.

I go into the menu on L4D -- Keyboard/Mouse -- Enable gamepad -- Edit keys, and the controller doesn't do anything when I try and map the buttons. :/

I'm not downloading anything to fix this, I know there is a way to fix it without needing to download or install anything.

Yes, as I've explained I've tried all of that ten times over. :/ My controller is not responding on this game and this game alone.

plug it in; shoud be compatible; if not, go control panel, and find the game section; nd there should be a section for external controllers, there you can config it; if not try plug it in the game and go to the settings in the game and change the responding controls
