In the wake Of the death of a 16-year-old Wong Ka Mui who took part in compensated dates, people start to be concerned about whether compensated dating has become increasingly pervasive.The consequences of compensated dating are far-reaching. What are the underlying reasons?

The culprit is the materialism in society. The growing affluence of Hong Kong has improved our quality of life, but it has also encouraged our teenagers'desire for material comforts. The belief that ''money is everything'' is deep-rooted in Hong Kong. Many teenagers are enthusiastic about brand-name products such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci, as these expensive goods show a higher social identity among their peers. However, young girls are too young to afford such a luxury. As a result, they turn to compensated dating, a shortcut to money. It is said that girls can earn $500 dollars in each compensated date. No wonder compensated dating is getting more and more ubiquitous.

The social atmosphere is not the only thing to blame though. Had sex education properly been provided by schools and parents, less girls would have gone on compensated dates.In school, sex education is seldom incorporated into the curriculum. Correct sex education tells us the correct attitude towards sex. For example, we should treasure our virginity and avoid underage sex. Yet, these values are not fully instilled into our youngsters' unsophisticated minds. Also, parents keep their mouth sealed about sex.''The more they know about sex, the more likely to try it.'' Parents defended. Consequently, young girls do not develop a right attitude towards sex, nor do they take compensated dating as something important.
