I'm Aussie. Thongs means like outdoor slippers, particular with the ones with a V looking strip at front.

The insurance may refuse to pay if you have an accident, so you are basically risking your insurance cover by wearing this kind of footwear. And that can become very expensive! .

Flip flops. Yes it's dangerous. They are not securely on your feet.

They can get under the wheel and cause an accident. Better without them.

I've always been told that they can slip off your feet and get hung up on the pedals, so I'd say skip those for driving.
