You only need an agent if you're going to try to work professionally and professional acting is a business. You don't just need AN agent - you need an agent that can help you advance your career goals and to do that you need to know what your career goals are. And you'll need to market yourself to agents - so to do that you need to understand yourself and how you fit into the Midwest acting industry enough to have a good idea of how you want to market yourself.
Understand that since agents are paid on commission, they're picky. Agents tend to represent actors near where the agent is located. So if you live in Small Town, IA for example you're not going to find many agents around there because there just isn't a lot of professional work in the area. And if you live hours and hours away from Chicago, it's doubtful you could get a Chicago agent to represent you because you live too far away. Auditions are often done on short notice, and if you can't make auditions then you can't book jobs and the agent won't get paid. Just some things to be aware of - you might want to learn more about the industry before you worry about getting an agent.
