Yes, ALL PS3 systems can play PS1 games. Just be aware not all PS1 games are fully compatible due to it being emulation hardware and not actual PS1 console hardware. So you can definitely play it, but you'll have to see how well it'll actually work for you.

it will run, but the game wont look good on the plasma tv.

possibly, for the most part the PS3 is not backwards compatible, but some games do work on some systems. Source is a website put up by Sony to check for compatibility of games.
