There are two ways of expressing speech;direct&indirect.
Whether tense change is required or not in the reported speech depends on the tense of the introductory verb.
No change needed when the introductory verb is in present tense.,not past tense.
Change the pronoun into third person in reported speech.
this---->that ; these---->those ; here---->there ; come---->go.
If or whether is used as connective in indirect questions when direct questions begin with auxiliary verbs.
The verb say is changed to ask,inquire,want to know, wonder, question,
More on Indirect questions:-When the direct question begins with an auxiliary verb like :-do,did,am,is,are,was, were,have, has, had, can,could, may, might, shall, will, should, would,etc.;if or whether is used as the connective in the reported speech
eg:-"Can you finish it today?" J.Spirit asked her.
