There are two kinds of fears, you might categorize them as rational and irrational fears. Irrational fears are phobias. You know there's nothing to be afraid of but you're afraid. Rational fears are things you SHOULD be afraid of.
In climbing, the fear of falling can be both. I mean, you SHOULD be afraid of falling and that should prompt you to climb safe, to know the rules and how to protect yourself. But if fear of falling keeps you from climbing (or enjoying it) that's an irrational fear.
The point I'm making (in my usual too-many-words style) is that you don't want to completely get over your fear of falling, you just want to get it under control. Besides, a little fear is what makes climbing exciting!
The way we deal with irrational fears, the only good way, is to confront them. You have to climb! Be careful, of course. Go slow. Go with friends you trust. Get into the habit of not looking down. It can be really upsetting and white-knuckle and frightening at first, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. It's really the only way!
