dog has diarhhea, new dog food the problem?

My dog (2 year old Golden Retriever mix) has been moved to a new dog food within the past week. We switched him from Diamond Naturals to Taste of the Wild. We did spend a few days transitioning him over but now he's having a really bad case of diarrhea. He's had it for a day and a half. It's not bloody or anything and when people come over he's still as happy and excited as usually... that's why I'm thinking it may be the dog food.
Is there something I can do to help him further transition to this dog food? I've heard a few ideas such as maybe feeding him twice a day instead of just once, or adding a tiny bit of pumpkin to his meal. I just want to try to avoid buying more diamond because our local pet store only carries 40 lb bags of it.

Taste of the Wild is great dog food. I feed it to both of my dogs. However, it can be pretty rich for some dogs. You could feed your dog plain, boiled chicken and rice for a few days to help with the diarrhea. After that, very slowly transition to the TOTW dog food again. It should take about two weeks to completely transition. Start with more of the old food, and gradually add the new food every day or so until the dog is only eating the new food.

Pumpkin may help to ease the stomach, but I've mostly only heard of adding that to a dogs food when they have an issue with eating their own poop.

Other stores carry smaller bags of diamond dog food. Try Tractor Supply or Menards.

I have dealt with these issues in the past, and they can be frustrating, but it'll pass. Good luck!

Three days isnt long enough. Should have been more like 7 to 10. For now, you can try adding a little plain canned pumpkin to his food (not pie filling, but plain canned pumpkin), or many dog like the taste and he may eat it right off the spoon - about a quarter cup between two feedings per day (which is the best practice). At this point, I would just keep feeding him the food you have switched to and add the pumpkin. That should do the trick.

If not, then there could be something else at play here and you may want to take him in for a senior exam. Good idea for older dogs anyway.

Three days in not long enough for dogs with sensitive stomach/bowels. I always suggest 10-14 days for the average dog, longer for dogs who get diarrhea.

Usually the best thing to do is add 1 tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin purée to each meal. You can buy it at your local grocery store or at some pet stores. Helps to firm up those poops nicely.

I'd start feeding two meals as well. Once in the morning, once in the evening.

Taste of the Wild is a pretty good food (4.5 out of 5) so I suggest sticking with it. Here is some interesting information for picking which formula you feed:

Taste of the Wild Sierra Mountain (3.5 stars)
Taste of the Wild Wetlands Formula (5 stars)
Taste of the Wild High Prairie Formula (5 stars)
Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Formula (4 stars)
Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy Formula (4 stars)
Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Puppy Formula (4 stars)

I should mention that both Diamond Natural and Taste of the Wild have been having some recall issues as they are made by the same company. That is why I have my dogs on Orijen, best food out there ingredients wise and no recalls ever.

Generally, I recommend slowly transition over to a new food over a 6 day period, maybe even longer if your dog has a sensitive stomach. It is very likely that the issue is just the fact that you switched the food and his stomach wasn't used to it. Generally, I recommend either plain yogurt or canned pumpkin paste on the food to help to get rid of the diarrhea. The natural sources of digestive health really do help to soothe sensitive stomachs.

I hope your dog feels better.

Feed twice daily, rice may help, Change probably was too sudden.

I just wrote a post on Blue Buffalos site about this. I recommended Blue to my family and friends only to have them come complain to me it gave their pet diarrhea. They just switched all at once. I had switched my pets and it took a good month before the cats didn't stink up the litter boxes. Dogs and cats have sensitive stomachs and it takes awhile to acclimate them to new food. Try switching as gradually as you can mixing the new food in with the old very very gradual. Take a month to switch completely. Even when I switched that slow they still took about 2-4 weeks to become completely normal. They didn't seem to be suffering any.
