1. Think of a number such that if you add 5 and divide the sum by 6, the result will exceed by 5 the number obtained by subtracting 5 and dividing the difference by 10.

2. I have a certain number of apples to divide equally among 48 children. If the number of apples were decreased by 20 and the number of children increased by 7, each child would receive one apple less. How much apples do I actually have?

Let x be the number.

(x+5)/6 - 5 = (x-5)/10

Multiply 60 to both sides.

10(x+5) - 300 = 6(x-5)

10x + 50 - 300 = 6x - 30

4x = 220

x = 55

The number is 55.

Let x be the original number of apples.

(x - 20)/(48 + 7) = x/48 - 1

(x - 20)/55 = x/48 - 1

Multiply both sides by 55*48 = 2640

48(x - 20) = 55x - 2640

48x - 960 = 55x - 2640

7x = 1680

x = 240

The original number of apples is 240.
