English question, please help?

The news provoked sadness and sympathy on Sina Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

is the word "equivalent" correct here? Should it be replaced by "equivalence"?

Yes, it's right but I suggest towards rather than on.

It is correct cause equivalent is a noun and also a verb.
E.g. If one amount or value is the equivalent of another, they are the same.

equivalent is right. "equivalence" would be wrong.
