$2 an Hour; is it enough?!?

I have just discovered that waiters/waitresses get $2 an hour. That is $1440 a month if they work 24/7 which is impossible. I am a full time student and get more than that for just my allowance, beside tuition fees, textbooks and even clothes. This made me realize how fortunate I am. Thank God for that. I wonder how can those people survive by the very few money they get. What should we do to change that? And where does all the money we pay go? I thought of opening a restaurant but I never thought that I will pay my staff this little.

wait staff get a minimum of $7.25 an hour.
$2.13 is the hourly wage. The rest is tips. UNLESS you don't make $7.25 per hour in tips, the restaurant is required to supplement your income.

The US minimum wage for tipped employees is $2.13 per hour. Some states do not allow the lower wage for tipped employees. When combined with tips, an employee must earn at least the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, otherwise the employer must make up the difference.

That is based upon the fact that they can get significant tips/

Well the idea is that if they lick enough customers' boots, they'll get enough tips to survive.

But even then, it's probably not enough. Welcome to capitalism.

Because $2 is salary and the rest is tips. Tips at a restaurant is typically 20% of the cost of the meal.

The real question is, how have you managed to survive this long?
