Since salvation was not a concept at the time and the concept of the messiah of the time did not remotely approach "salvation" as Christians believe, it seems inappropriate to take a random verse that is more meaningful in context and apply it to "salvation"

I'd suggest that you take the verses from Proverbs as they were written, i.e. as literal proverbs.
