If your look up "pit" in dictionary, it may say "fight" or "contest" between A & B...The key to this comprehension is not just finding the meaning, but understading the sentence/paragraph/text structure and discription:
"pit" their "mahjong" skills, what the sentence describing is not about fight of of the person against each other, but use of their skills to "fight" against each other. So the subject is the "skills" not the "person". Thus, we must find a "verb" that is use to describ "skills" with a meaning of "competition/winning". Therefore, "test" is the more appropriate verb to replace / substitute for "pit" with the correct sentence syntex/subject-verb agreement.
"attempt" can be applied as a verb for skills. But here the meaing is "against each other", attempt only means to try on your own and not related to the others.
run cannot be applied to the subject "skill", and the meaning is not related to "pit".
