Is an animal shelter required to weigh the animal before being PTS?

This is an important question that I can't find the answer to online and was hoping someone with better google skills can find it. I need proof of this. Vets can and will PTS, no questions asked. Shelter rules may be different. Can a shelter PTS by request? And are they required to be weighed. I'm in California. Animals are considered property.
The reason for weighing the animal before PTS (putting it to sleep) is to make sure the shelter staff is using the correct amount of euth. fluid so the animal is comfortable.
I'm an animal lover so please no rude comments, I don't agree with PTS unless the animal is sick or dying.

Nekkid...Most shelters do not PTS private animals you do have to go to a vet. Heart sticks are illegal here but I have seen it done on kittens. Zoe... Your so right about that. I volunteered for over 7 years at the shelter. When 3cc were needed only 1cc was given to save on euth.fluid. South...I didn't ask about need. Obviously this shelter does NEED to weigh them. I need to know if its a law. I've been VA for many years as well as a shelter volunteer. They are giving less not more.

You don't NEED to weigh, You can usually guesstimate based on looking at the dogs. There is a dose, but most people give more than that to be safe.
Edit: There is no law requiring weighing.
If you under-dose, they may fall asleep but not pass, so you simply give more.

Below is the euthanasia recommendations set forth by the AVMA. Yes it is best to weigh the animal before euthanasia. In the long run weighing is humane and saves money. This way over dosages and under dosages are prevented. I would guess that this would depend upon the shelter's protocols. however since you are in California there is most likely a law for this. So you will need to find anything that maybe specific for California. Below is a link to the California Practice Act. You can also contact the state veterinarian with your question.

As far as shelters euthanizing by request, I believe that depends upon the shelter's protocol and procedures.

that would depend on the shelters individual rules or policies
