when I got baby she was so sick. bloody eyes, runny nose, etc. repertory infection. got antibiotics, made her better, but she's a little over a yr. and a half and been on anti. over and over. vet says either feline herpes or nasal pass. were damaged. either she's all dried up or all snotty, sneezing. I haven't been real diligent with the lysine he says 500mg, after stuffing so many pills in her you feel so guilty. he said to give her allergy pills, chlorpheniramine maleate tabs 2m morn night 2mgs. I've also tried off brand zyrtec, they don't work! then it occurred to me that I take honey, why not? just started 2 days ago. 1/2 teaspoon got all of it down night before last only half last night. I saw on one of the answers people said something about corn, gluten, grains as fillers, being a contributing factor? she eats well, drinks, etc. fine. her lungs are fine, just got an x-ray last mo. help!! any opinions or help would be appreciated. if you have any questions please e-mail me. Thank you so much. Sandra

There is no definite answer on how safe honey is for cats. Cats should not have carbohydrates, and especially sugars. I wouldn't be giving it to my cats .... The lysine can easily be given to her in her food. You can crush the tablet, and put it in a spoon of canned food. Lysine *does* work very well for herpes, no one knows if it works in humans, let alone cats. Allergy pills tend also to not work for herpes. The only control really is lysine, and a healthy diet (which means meat, and not carbs like the honey).

I am not an expert but I know what I have observed with my own cats for years that raw honey has been fine for my cats--bears eat it, dogs love it- I would not give her too much at the time--you do a teaspoon for your size, she should have a small portion of a teaspoon based on her size--I also follow with a little regular food to let the honey be adsorbed more slowly. I think it helps with the red eyes and builds immunity like it does in humans. It has to be raw-don;t give them too much and make sure it is not processed honey like sue bee.

Why did you give your cat something without first asking the vet? How bad would you feel if the vet said honey is toxic for your cat after you fed it to the cat? Never ever give anything for humans unless the vet has said specifically that you can.

As for the Lysine, why do you give it in pill form? I have a container of white powder and a tiny scoop from the vet's office. I use a teaspoon and dip a teaspoonful of babyfood and mix the L-Lysine into the babyfood and my cat loves that as a treat. My vet recommended this and worked fine. The only babyfood acceptable is Gerber's Meat. It comes in small jars and there are four or five flavors. The cheapest I've found it is at Walmart. My cats do the best with beef and chicken flavors but beef is their first choice. I have an 18 year old cat with no teeth and when she's feeling picky she loves the baby food for a few meals. My herpes cat gets his every morning as a treat to lick up. Good luck!
