why do some war films show united states troops being buried in foreign soil where they were killed? I thought everyone was brought back to the states and buried in home soil? No one gets left behind? Or do they go back after the war is over and retrieve the bodies?

It has been United States policy that war dead will be brought back to the United States since the Korean War.

Prior to Korea, United States Policy was to bury war dead in the theater they were killed in, or the nearest US soil - whichever was closest. Following WWI and WWII, relatives were given a set period in which to request their KIAs to be returned - after that, they stayed where they were.

When a KIA was buried in a hasty grave or temporary cemetery in WWI or WWII, they were later retrieved by Mortuary Affairs and reburied in permanent overseas cemeteries, pending the end of hostilities and any request from next of kin to have the body repatriated.

These days it is a fairly simple process to transport the fallen by jet aircraft back to the U.S. However, that is a fairly recent development in the history of war. Prior to that, transport to and from overseas was by ship, which could take days or weeks. It may sound harsh, but the fallen were not given a high priority for transport back to the U.S. when the wounded, or more critical supplies needed it more.

You also need to consider this: Refrigeration was non-existent on the battlefield, so the fallen had to be buried as soon as possible to mitigate the spread of disease.

You ask why they are still there and not back on U.S. soil? First, those cemeteries can be considered U.S. soil; they were bought and paid for in blood. Second, many of the families of the fallen requested that they remain where they fell.

Google is your friend.

There are US military cemeteries all over the globe. France has several. The Marine cemetery that was on Iwo Jima is one of the more famous relocations. When Iwo Jima was given back to Japan, the Marines were exhumed and their bodies were relocated to US soil.

And then use Google to learn more about them.
