In the evening,they ____(cook) dinner together. That night the ____(go) to bed early

就係這句

我唔明白
係到點解要用past continuous
就算有while
都係

were sleeping

其實你問得好好～
這裏用 rained 或者是用 was raining其實都正確，但在意思上有些微分別。

它用
It was raining heavily while they were sleeping.
是指他們正在睡覺的時候，一直（每一刻）也在下雨。

你想
It rained heavily while they were sleeping.
是指他們正在睡覺的時間內有下雨。

我同時建議你看看以下的投影片（只是很短），但解釋得很清楚何時用past continuous 及 past simple tense，也解釋了when和while的分別。相信很適合你現在看看。

當中你見到有三個情況之下會用 past continuous。
1. a specific time
2. an action was in progress at every moment
