he goes to sha tin by train. （他透過坐火車去沙田）
he goes to sha tin on the train. （他在火車上去沙田）

兩句文法上都對，但於用法來說，第一句沒問題，第二句用得很怪。

by train 是指「透過火車」； on train 是指「在火車上」。所以你仔細想一想第二句：你在一個火車車廂內要怎樣行才能去到沙田呢？沙田並不在車廂入面啊，因此這句的意思有點矛盾。

on train 這樣已經可以了，並沒有加了 the 一定要轉 on 這回事。由於 the 有着指明某樣東西的含義，所以如果你想說「他在某一特定的火車上」，那就用 on the train；反之，如果你只是想說「他在火車上」，沒特別指明哪一火車的話，那就用 on train。

on 和 by 的用法中真的有很多（這裏寫不了），但最主要的用法是：by 有「透過／以」的意思；on 有「在上面」的意思，亦能用來表示日子（如 on July 16）。

He is on the train/bus (going) to Shatin. - "the train (going) to Shatin" specifies one particular train, not just any train.

第二句並不常見，有需要掉轉寫，he is on the train going to shatin 比較合適。
