Okay, I am so mad! So at the end of June, I got a call for a job that I applied for at a daycare/preschool called "Learning Tree School". The director called me and said to come in for an interview. So I did. It seemed like a good place at first. Very organized. Well, I told her, this would be my first job. Because I've never worked before. I told her though, I am very good with kids, I took "Early Childhood Education 1 and 2" classes at school and Child Development. Early Childhood Education 2 was the class where I was on a team and we had to be the teachers for the preschoolers. My school had a really good preschool program called "Kolt Kids" so we were the head teachers and I experienced everything with them! We had to make them snacks, had to teach them about certain topics, do art with them, etc. And when we didn't have the children at school, we had class discussions about positive guidance, discipline, growth and development, everything related to children!!!! I know everything from how to prevent SIDS and Shaken baby syndrome, all the way up to Eriksons 8 stages! So, I went in for the interview at the preschool and I told her I got a 95% on my Early Childhood Ed. 2 state test and I got a 92% on my Child Development state test and in child development we learn so much about children and babies and growth and development. So, I told her every experience that I had had before this, and she didn't seem to have a problem with anything. So, she interviewed me and during the interview, I noticed that she kept trying to make me nervous. She was like "if you're nervous at all with any of our 12 or 13 year olds, they'll know and they'll give you a hard time so you cant be nervous at all" so I didn't really think much about it. She told me to come back on Monday for "Orientation". So Monday morning comes around, and I go into the preschool for orientation. She gave me a tour of the place at the interview on Friday, so I didn't have to go on a tour at the orientation. Basically, I was pretty much hired. It said "new employee orientation" so I was pretty much a new employee. Well, before I could start, she wanted me to read her handbooks, and rules and regulations and things like that. So I was in their employee room and she gave me about 4 binders to read about rules, regulations, information, parent handbook, etc. and told me to sign the papers once I had read them. So I read EVERY SINGLE PAGE TWICE!! It explained about SIDS, the STAGES OF CHILDREN, Positive discipline and positive guidance, shaken baby syndrome, what to do in a fire drill, temperatures and when to take children outside and when to keep them in, food preparation, uniform, sick procedures, all of that! I read everything through twice! And, I am a fairly fast reader. So, I was done reading everything in about 1 hour. I read everything and signed the papers saying that I had read them, then took the binders back to the director at the front desk. Well, when I took the binders back up there, she was like "You're done reading them already?" I said "yeah" she said "I honestly don't believe you could have read and comprehended all of that information in an hour. What, are you like a speed reader?" and I said "Well, I just read and comprehend everything fast" and she says "I'm not calling you a liar, but I don't believe that you read and fully understood all of that in an hour, it usually takes our employees 2-3 hours to get through all of that material" and I said "Well I'm not your other employees, I just learned all of this in school because I just barely graduated, so a lot of it was like a review" PLUS, might I add, she had all of the fire drill, earthquake drill papers in there TWICE, so I read that one twice!!!!!!!!!!! Plus, it had about the procedure when parents pick their children up, how you're supposed to ask for I.D. I read everything and she just kept telling me "no, I don't believe that you read and comprehended it in an hour, I'm sorry, but I don't feel comfortable to have you working here" so she made me sign that I put in an hour of "work" and she was like "Okay, I'll send you your check after our pay period" and then I came home in tears because of what had happened. Do you think this was fair? I put in full effort 100% because I really wanted that job and I get crucified for reading something in a decent amount of time?? Opinions please! :-(

Not only unfair but illegal. She can't fire you without giving you a chance to correct your mistakes (e.g. re-read the material).
You sounded like Lil Miss Smarty Pants. You never talk back to a director. You say 'yes', or politely discuss your skills. Saying "Well I'm not your other employees" just says you need to be shown the door. The director needs a team player, not a 'know it all' lone wolf.

I agree with the other 2 posters.
To sum it up.
1: You have classroom education, which could mean like the phrase "you are school smart, but not street smart".
2. You have no job experience, and more importantly no experience working in a child care facility.
3: You talked back to your boss, which is a no no, especially after just being hired. You basically told her by reading everything, you knew it all.
Sorry, most likely did not want to hear this.
I agree with your first answer about answering back to a director and they were trying to get you annoyed to see how you would react and you were suppose to try and calm the situation as you would if it was a parent you were talking to about a problem with their child. You should not have said you were not one of their other employees, you should have stayed calm and smiled and say you are a fast reader and politely mentioned that there was a few duplicated pages. As you say your were pretty much hired but did they ever tell you the job was yours? I doubt it because that is why you were having the orientation just like a second interview, Good Luck
