I put a 1996 E250 5.8 into my 1995 F150 5.0. It works great.
Did not change or mess with the ECU.
I pulled the engine complete with the wiring harness and everything related I could. The power steering and AC brackets are specific to 351W's because the engine is a bit taller and wider at the top. This also effects the exhaust fitment.
My truck has a 4R70W that I like. 5.8 trucks are "supposed" to have E4OD transmissions, which I don't like. So I've got the combo I want. Unfortunately the ECU's for 4R70W trucks are different from E4OD trucks so I couldn't swap in a 5.8 ECU if I wanted to. Shortly after the swap I laid down about a 45 foot long black mark on the road in front of my house, so I don't think I'll worry too much about messing with the computer. (Old 5.0 would barely spin a tire.) My next mod was a traction-lok rear end swap. Very much shorter dual black marks now and I wouldn't swap the truck for a new one. Engine swap was about 18 months ago and it's daily driven. Next mod I want to do is headers but the kind of odd van EGR setup I ended up with limits my choices to shorties unless I engineer something. I'm thinking about it.
BTW, 302 and 351W pistons are the same "size". A 351W has a longer stroke. Longer stroke equals more torque. More torque plus truck equals smiley face.
