And almost all of my friends at school who are accepted to UCLA and UC Berkeley took the SAT II tests, and some did not score very high. So my sole advice is-- take them!

Not anymore. Starting Fall 2012, the UCs no longer require the SAT II subject tests. Only the regular SATs are required. From now on, only certain majors "recommend" taking the SAT II subject tests at a few campuses. Refer to the UC website.
