The missing part to properly answer this question is, are you going to buy from a backyard breeder or are you going to buy from an AKC Breeder of Merit? A Breeder of Merit is who I always suggest going to, whether you plan on showing or not. These people are recognized for adhering or in some cases improving the breed standard. They show their dogs and many times use them in sports that the breed was intended for. They are often involved in local breed clubs and shows. They generally, will help inform you about the breed you are interested in. They want to know you'll care for the puppy for life and usually offer to take back the dog, no questions asked if an unexpected life event comes up and you can no longer care for the dog. They breed to get the best conformation, health and disposition, and are careful about what bloodlines they choose. These puppies almost always have champion titled parents. They generally screen for all the health defects known to that breed and often only breed one litter a year or every couple years. They usually require a spay and neuter contract. And if you do become interested in showing, they want to help you. Because of all this, their puppies are in high demand even for someone who just wants a companion. Some people wait weeks, months or even a year. You'll also pay more too. Generally, $1,000 and up, depending on location, breed, and so on. The extra cost is worth it because you generally will have a healthier and much better conformed dog. Poor conformation, what is what most of the BYB pups have in common, definitely leads to joint, alignment and many other problems. BYB, usually do not know a thing about conformation. They don't bother to get health screens done and if they do, they don't bother going to a specialist. They usually don't do anything with their dogs but breed. AKC.org is a good place to start gathering information. I'd start there.
