I know it maybe difficult to answer but please just give me your best answer or guess.

How much would these dogs cost to get as puppies:
Norfolk terrier
Havanese
West highland white terrier
Australian terrier
Lhasa Apso
Yorkshire Terrier
Maltese
Japanese Chin

I live around Austin, Texas... i dont know if that matters. I wont be showing the dog I just want one for a companion. Also if you own one of these breeds could you tell me what its like living with them? Also if you know of a place I could buy one that would be incredibly helpful. Thanks!!

The missing part to properly answer this question is, are you going to buy from a backyard breeder or are you going to buy from an AKC Breeder of Merit? A Breeder of Merit is who I always suggest going to, whether you plan on showing or not. These people are recognized for adhering or in some cases improving the breed standard. They show their dogs and many times use them in sports that the breed was intended for. They are often involved in local breed clubs and shows. They generally, will help inform you about the breed you are interested in. They want to know you'll care for the puppy for life and usually offer to take back the dog, no questions asked if an unexpected life event comes up and you can no longer care for the dog. They breed to get the best conformation, health and disposition, and are careful about what bloodlines they choose. These puppies almost always have champion titled parents. They generally screen for all the health defects known to that breed and often only breed one litter a year or every couple years. They usually require a spay and neuter contract. And if you do become interested in showing, they want to help you. Because of all this, their puppies are in high demand even for someone who just wants a companion. Some people wait weeks, months or even a year. You'll also pay more too. Generally, $1,000 and up, depending on location, breed, and so on. The extra cost is worth it because you generally will have a healthier and much better conformed dog. Poor conformation, what is what most of the BYB pups have in common, definitely leads to joint, alignment and many other problems. BYB, usually do not know a thing about conformation. They don't bother to get health screens done and if they do, they don't bother going to a specialist. They usually don't do anything with their dogs but breed. AKC.org is a good place to start gathering information. I'd start there.

Most all pet quality purebreds from a reputable breeder will start at about $600+

The going rate for a well-bred purebred is $600-2000 for a pet-quality puppy. For a toy breed, it is usually the upper end of that range, and I would be surprised if you could find a well-bred, purebred puppy for less than $1000 (start with the national parent club to find a REPUTABLE breeder if you want a purebred puppy).

The going rate for any breed in rescue is $50-300. Based on that LONG list of possible breeds, it seems like just about any toy breed will do? See if one fits your needs.

The breeds you mentioned vary in price. Are you looking to rescue or buy? If you are looking to rescue they will cost 65-600 dollars depending on where you rescue them form (shelter or private organization)

If you want to buy, and please only buy from a reputable breeder one of these dogs BYB can cost you thousands in vet bills and be riddled with major health problems. Go on the breed clubs and looks at breeders on those sites, or go on AKC and only look at breeders of Merit. A well bred, healthy, puppy of one of those breeds could cost 800-3000 dollars.

I live with a Japanese Chin rescue, BYB, health and physical problems galore) he is soo much fun! Such a sweetie, he can be shy but that is because he was kenneled in the dark for the better part of 3 years and never socialized. He loves to play, but also cuddles and just chills out. Chins do not really bark like you would think they chatter more than anything kinda sound like raccoons. Very cute, fun little dogs.

Or you know, you could have a heart and save a shelter dog.
When I went and got my chihuahua mix from the shelter they had LOTS of purebred dogs. I'm assuming by there looks anyways. And who cares if you have a purebred anyways? Does it make you feel high and might to say, "oh yes, she's purebred."???

Save a lifeee.

If you have to ask you can't afford a dog. This survey was done in 2004 so prices have gone up and prices do vary from area to area, but should there be and illness or accident the cost could double or triple. What ever dog you get is not cheap and think about an 8-10 year commitment minimum.

ONE TIME EXPENSES

Purchase/adoption fees $646
Spay/neuter $160
Emergency Vet Visits/Surgeries $631
Training Fees/Supplies $340
General Supplies: bowl, crate, leashes $350

TOTAL $2127.00

ANNUAL EXPENSES

Food $446
Vet Care (check-ups, shots) $423
Travel $279
Grooming $190
Pet sitting, walking, boarding $223
Toys/treats $217
Ongoing Training $254
Dog events $457

TOTAL $2489.00

Explanatory Notes:

The survey was conducted by the American Kennel Club during a two-week period in July 2004. A total of 1,001 surveyors responded voluntarily to 11 questions.

Respondents were primarily females (76%) between the ages of 35-54 (47%). Many lived in a suburb (34%) or urban area (28%).

pet-quality from a reputable breeder.. $800-1200. these will come from parents who have been tested for genetic health issues, and have earned CH titles and proove they fit breed standard.

from a backyard breeder, petshop or puppy mill.. anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand.. depending on if they call it a "teacup" or claim its from "celebrity bloodlines" or a "rare color" or use some other marketing scam. Bear in mind, these dogs have no genetic health tests.. and the parents have not prooven that they fit breed standard.. so pups may not end up being what the breed is supposed to be like.

Shelter or rescue.. few hundred or less.
