A 3.26 kg cat moves in a straight line (the x-axis). the figure
(Figure 1) shows a graph of the x-component of this cat's velocity
as a function of time.

What is the magnitude of the net force at time 8.5 s?

Acceleration of the cat between 6 s and 10 s = (12-8)/(10-6) m/s^2 = 1 m/s^2
Use: net-force = mass x acceleration
net force = 3.26 x 1 N = 3.26 N
