You need to get realistic.

1. In theory, it takes about 19 hours to drive through San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. But in fact, it takes about 2.5 days to do so based on the way of travel.

Also - it may take longer if you are not a seasoned driver.

2. A lot of "road-trip" drivers like to stop here and there to enjoy, which will significantly delay time.

3. Your "transportation' cost is about the same if you fly instead.

4. For Los Angeles only, if you don't intend to skip any theme parks (Disneyland, Universal Studio), the city will use at least half of your time.

So here is my suggestion:

a. Fly as you can - It is okay to drive between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. But between San Francisco and Los Angeles/Las Vegas, flying is still the best option if you have only 2 people;

b. Reduce a city from your plan;

c. Increase your allotted time.

Otherwise, you will be too tired to enjoy the trip.

Super agree with Gary.

I drove from SF to LA last month and it took me 8+ hours (usually 6.5 but there was traffic). I got stuck on highway for so long which i didn't feel like sightseeing anymore.
I also did a road trip from LA to Las Vegas awhile ago. It was a lot shorter but it was boring since there are only mountains and fields on the way.

So, my suggestion for you would be:
Fly from SF to LA, rent a car at the airport.
Since if you don't have a car, it's hard to go around.
Since you have the rental already, you can drive to Las Vegas if you want to experience "road trip". Basically you do not need a car when you are in downtown Las Vegas. However, returning your car at a different location always cost a lot more.
Then fly from Las Vegas back to SF.


Actually air tickets aren't that expensive for these 3 places.

One way is around $100
Check Spirit from LA to Las Vegas <www.Spirit.com>
One way is as low as $50
Las Vegas to SF with Southwest is as low as $120

One more suggestion, you should also go to San Diego if you are in LA area already. it is a very pretty city.
