In "compact fluorescent lamp" (慳電膽) electrons flow through the fluorescent lamp and collide with mercury vapour atoms, causing photons of UV (ultraviolet) light to be released. The UV light is then converted into visible light as it passes through the phosphor coating on the inside of the glass tube.
Compact fluorescent lamps emit light from a mix of phosphors inside the bulb, each emitting one band of color. Modern phosphors balance the emitted light color. Every extra phosphor added to the coating mix improves color rendering. Good quality compact fluorescent lamps use three or four phosphors to achieve a "white" light.
