English question, please help.?

I walked around the classroom and made sure my students were up to task.

Is this correct and nature to say "up to task", are there other ways of saying it?
I wanted to say that the students are following and up to the process and expectations the lesson is at.

Thanks.

"up to the task" is grammatically correct. It implies the subject is ready/prepared/motivated to handle the task.
