Trying to switch to wet cat food?

Okay, I've been trying to switch my cat over to wet food for a while now and it's just not working... She seems to hate just about anything and everything that's considered a healthy choice for wet food AND she's a little bit overweight [by ~1-2lbs according to the vet]. Which is one of the reasons I want to switch her over. She also seems to have Urinary Health issues, another reason I want to switch to wet.

I was thinking about trying to get her to eat Fancy Feast wet food at the very least because I've read that any kind of wet food is better than dry food. Would this be a good idea for now? If so, which of the wet FF's is the better choice? She hates pate style foods the most but she'll eat a little shredded/minced foods as long as there is gravy which I read was also bad because of high carbs...

Right now I'm feeding her Nutro Natural Choice, Indoor dry food. However the recommended amounts for a 12lb cat [Her current weight] say 1/2 cup per day. Since I'm trying to help her lose weight I've been feeding her the recommended amount for an 8lb cat [1/3 cup per day] since the chart completely skips 10lbs which is what the vet told me she should weigh. However she never completely finishes her food in one sitting or even the entire day. She's a nibbler, although I'm currently in the process of getting her on a feeding schedule too.

Twice per day is the goal.

I don't know how she can be overweight without ever fully finishing her meals... It worries me when she doesn't eat everything because I'm supposed to take away the food after about 15 to 20 minutes and then not feed her for another 8-12 hours. It doesn't seem like she's getting the amount of kcals she needs per day but is overweight at the same time!

BTW - I'm not looking for the answer Ken S provides everybody with when they ask questions like this. I already went over all that stuff and didn't get a CLEAR answer from any of it.

That's actually what made me second guess just trying to feed her wet FF with gravy... If I can find one she'll eat would it better to have her eat that rather than dry even it's not the best wet food out there?

It takes a while to get a "dry food junkie" converted to canned, but it can be done at least to some degree. First step is to eliminate the free feeding of dry. Measure the amount of dry she gets into three equal portions. Feed it breakfast, afternoon (before dinner), and before bed. When the dry portion is gone, it's GONE. Take the food up after the 20 minutes, and no more until next feeding. Once she's accustomed to this, then figure out which meal is her "hungriest". Get the Fancy Feast, any kind. Even the "with gravy" ones at this point. For this meal, give her a tablespoon of canned food, prior to giving her dry. Hopefully she is hungry enough to eat it. Give her some dry once she's sampled the canned, but less than her normal portion. Keep this up, reducing the dry food as she eats the canned which is always offered first. Make notes of what flavors and textures of canned she seems to like, and dislike. Cats react both to texture AND flavor of their foods. It may be that the best you can do is get her eating half canned and half dry - but hey, that is better than all dry! Have patience, it isn't going to happen overnight. Even my last dry-food holdout is now eating half canned, but it took over a year :(

And BTW - Fancy Feast isn't the best canned food, but it's far from the worst. It does contain carbs and by-products, but it does have a real meat as the first ingredient. Much better than the Friskies and 9-Lives even if it's not an all-meat food.

Have you tried the Merrick brand? That is more like flaked chicken/turkey and she may go better for that. My guys won't eat any of the gravy kind - they WANT the pate' only.

You can try FF, just use the more premium ones.

GIVE ME A BREAK. GIVE ME A BREAK. BREAK ME OFF A PIECE OF THAT FANCY FEAST! Sorry. Every time I see that brand name I have to sing the song :p

She'll get hungry enough that she'll eat it if its her only option. Cats are smart. They won't let themsves starve. The most important things is that she's drinking. So it's ok if it takes her a few days before eating the wet food. She'll get used to it eventually.
