When western families have meals with their relatives outside, say, in a restaurant, who would usually pay the bill? Do they pay separate, or someone is paying for the whole cost?

Here in the United States, the head of the household normally picks up the restaurant tab when a family dines out. If two related families or just close friendly families meet for dinner, the two family heads of household have usually discussed the 'who pays' aspect and already decided which individual will pay this time. In some families, the one not paying the tab often pays/leaves the tip for the servers. Next time the same families gather for diner, they would trade positions, with the prior tip payer picking up the tab and the prior payer of the entire tab paying just the tip.
