the degree of the term 6x = 1
the degree of the term -7 = 0
hence the degree of the polynomial f(x) is 5.

Let g(x) be the polynomial x^2 y^4 + 6x y^3 - 7
there are 3 terms in the polynomial g(x): x^2 y^4, 6xy^3, -7
the degree of the term x^2 y^4 = 2 + 4 = 6
the degree of the term 6xy^3 = 1 + 3 = 4
the degree of the term -7 = 0
hence the degree of the polynomial g(x) is 6.
