Omission of 'if'?

Today I heard my lecturer said:

I am not sure I will understand

But I think the correct (grammatical correct) way of saying this should be

'I am not sure IF/ WHETHER I will understand'

The complementizer 'if/ whether' seems to be omitted. Which sentence do you feel right grammatically?

Yes you are correct. Here "if" is omitted.
