1. 為什麼用was不是用is
其實這句句子用is代替was, 也是可行的.
用was, 就代表'傷痕是之前已被發現', 即過去式.
而用is則表示現在式.

另外, Was在句子中是顯示"被動"的動作
was covered 指"被遮蓋"
意指'他的傷痕把他遮蓋', 就是說全身傷痕(傷痕多的程度足以遮蓋他)
有點用了誇張手法.


2. 用falling 為何不用fell
要注意falling off 之前是after, 即介系詞
在介系詞後面, 我們用名詞
因為after後面要表達的是動作,所以用動名詞(gerund),就是在原形後+ing
即v+ing
例: 1. Phone me before coming.
2. He fell( fall) asleep after reading a boring book.

3. covered是一分詞, 不是過去式
covered前面的was才是證明這句子時式的關鍵
was covered是過去分詞
is covered則現在分詞
記得be(不論is am are was were be being been)+pp(分詞) 是被動的意思

在你這句子, covered 是 past participle, 不是 past tense

present participle 和 past participle是無 tense, 雖然有 present or past 字眼在 participle. 前面.
要用 be (e.g. is/are, was/were) + (present/past) participle 來決定 tense

但牛津字典更列 covered 還可以做 adjective, not before a noun

但我覺得其他字典解釋 was covered 是 passive voice 較適宜
Compare:~ The hut was filled with thick smoke. (filled 很難解作 adjective)

after 雖然可做 conjunction, preposition, adverb and adjective, 但在這句是 preposition (前置詞)
如果 after 是 conjunction, 句子應該是
He was covered with bruises after he fell off his bicycle.
After (連接詞) 是連接 two clauses

falling 是 present participle, 因為用作 noun, 所以叫 gerund
falling off his bicycle 是 participle phrase, functions as a noun phrase.

用 participle phrase 比較簡潔.

This is because was covered is the passive voice
and the way we use passive voice is:
be + pp
and cover's present tense, past tense and pp are
cover covered covered.
