can you rank these actors in order?

Okay. First of all, acting is an extremely subjective art and is not something that can be rated or ranked since the way an actor's performance impacts a person varies from viewer to viewer.

With that said, in my PERSONAL OPINION AND EXPERIENCE, I would have to say that I I am the most familiar with and most consistently respectful of the work of Paul Newman, Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, and Daniel Day Lewis.

I choose these actors because, for me, they seem to be the ones (out of the options you gave) which are the most versatile and have played the widest variety of roles well.

However, some of these earlier actors (James Stewart, Marlon Brando, Humphrey Bogart) have influenced these more modern actors and their choices. For this reason, I again emphasize that acting is not something you can rate since it is so subjective.

Im not familiar with James Stewart or Laurence Oliver so I will respectfully disregard them from the list.

8. Pacino (by no means a bad actor, I just think he is a little overrated)
7. Brando (more of a big star than a very talented actor)
6. De Niro (its tough for me to put him so low, but given the remaining talent)
5. Newman (Eddie the Hustler/Color of Money were magnificent roles)
4. Hanks (Personal fav for a long time, but recently has fallen off)
3. Nicholson (the perfect combination of star and actor of the list)
2. Bogart (just plain legendary)
1. Lewis (what planet is he from?)

Robert DeNiro first.....
