So what is it with "cheap"? Photography, at any level, is an expensive hobby, like driving, it's expensive. There is no cheap - not when it comes to quality... and especially not below £400 or so.

I din't think the Ixus range are manual focus. Virtually all compacts are Auto focus. I'm not sure you'll get anything for £50 but look for an SLR (or DSLR) on eBay or similar.
