since HK is a very multicultural city, i would say that there isn't any special local music. HK music is very influenced by the countries around it. moreover, i dno't feel like HK culture supports music developments a lot. true that many parents push their children to learn music, but in their eyes, it's just a stepping stone to get into a good school. if you ask how many parents would encourage their children to step on a journey of a musician, the number is very little. sure there are opportunities for people to learn and understand music, but compare to many other countries, there aren't enough. Music, to many people, is only a tool to a better school and hence a brighter future. i am not saying that having a good future is wrong, but music has never been looked at seriously as a career for many HK citizens. Even for the so call "professional singers" on television, it might just be a stepping stone for them.
other than pop musics, other music genres are barely ever mentioned by HK people. i believe if i go on the street and talk to people about classical musics and operas, rarely anyone would know what i am talking about. i cannot say that our society is rejecting everything other and pop music, but the exaggeration of pop music has caused the other genres to fade out in the society. without the support of these ancestors in music, music can easily get lost and even die out in the society.
