I was born in Macau but am now living in UK. As I know it is nearly impossible to renew my ID card in London if I do not speak Portuguese, I am thinking of renewing it in Lisbon during a holiday instead. Do you know what would the procedure be? What documents will I need to bring? And approximately how long will it take? You can reply me through Chinese as I can read Chinese. It is just because my Chinese typing skills are really bad that I choose to write in English instead. Thank you very much for your great help!

Gary, thank you for your answer. But I would like to tell you that if you can't speak Portuguese you can't even talk to the receptionist because he/she is extremely cold to people who do not speak Portuguese. I guess you will only know this if you have been there before.

Gary, thanks for your advice again. However, I would like to tell you that people in the Portuguese embassy in London can of course speak English! But the guard in the front door had already informed us that once we entered the embassy, we could not speak any languages other than Portuguese.

Unfortunately it seems to be their practice that they will only speak Portuguese inside the embassy. Indeed there had been many people like me that had failed to renew thier ID cards and had to go to Portugual instead.

Besides, there is no need to argue about the embassy in London as I had already tried going there twice and both attempts had been unsuccessful

Your logic has flaw. If staffs at the Portuguese Embassy London do not know how to speak in English, can you expect anyone know how to speak English in Lisbon? Beside - you need an address for the Portuguese Government to mail you the new Citizen ID.

As English is one of the official language of the EU, even Portugal's official language is Portuguese, they are still obligated provide translation to other EU official language.

In answering your questions:

1. The Embassy will collect your old Bilhete de Identidade. Upon verification of your identity, the Embassy staff will take your information, photo, and fingerprint.

2. Bilhete de Identidade, as well as any other thing you can prove you are a Portuguese citizen and identity (like your passport).

3. About an hour.

Please prepare Euro in advance.

Okay - this is my suggestion - show the receptionist your passport.

Cold or not - after seeing the passport, the receptionist is obligated to assist.

Beside, the logic is still not right - Portuguese Embassy hires a person in a English speaking country that does not know English? Very strange.
