I play the role of policeman in the play.If you critically read the alternative statement ‘I play the role as a policeman in the play’ you will find that it can be interrupted to be the same as ‘I play the role as a policeman would in the play’.
‘In this play I have been cast in the role of a policeman’ or ‘In the play I have the role of the policeman’.
