When I was a student, studying zoology, I was camping near Loch Ness with a friend. Every day we would row across the loch to go walking. One day, we were rowing back when a mist descended. We could still see far enough to find our way back but it did make the loch look a bit spooky. Suddenly, there was a big splash no more than two or three feet from the boat and we caught a glimpse of the water closing over something dark. We rowed so hard to get back to shore that we actually broke one of the oars. The owner of the camp-site told us that it was probably a salmon or an otter but we stuck to our own side of the lock after that.
