Really really thick spicy drink...maybe a type of chai...? What could it be?

I vaguely remember when I was a kid going to a coffe shop with my mum one year in the winter and they had some super super thick, hot, spicy (chai-like) drink. The consistancy (that I can remember) was probably comparable to a soft slushee. It was a brown-greyish colour and I think it was made of up granules suspended in the mix...? It was not like regular milk tea where all that is visible is the final mixed colour, I remember seeing particles (of spices??) in it.
It was served from a glass-barrel thing out of a spout in the bottom.

I am recently on a bit of a chai-latte kick and really want to know what this drink could have been so that I can try to recreate it.

Anyone have any idea?

They might have actually called it a "Chai" but it is nothing like the chai's any places around me are selling.... except perhaps in the flavour....

@Riku: It was proabably a type of chai latte, but whats getting me is that it was literally the consistancy of a slushee/thick milkshake. If you (or anyone else) know of a recipe for this could you share a link please? :)

更新3:

It was in an ocean-side cafe in Vancouver, BC (Canada). I do know that they only had it for a very limited time.

更新4:

it was served hot. I think there might also have been a paddle in the "glass-barrel"-thing they served it from that was stirring it around. Sorry for all the random details, I'm just hoping that they help jog someone's memory about what on earth this could have been! :P (and thank you to everyone for trying to help me find this drink!)

@Veli: Is that drink you posted ever served without being strained (if the spices have been ground)? From what I remember it didn't taste particularly granular, but it looked like the entire body of the drink was formed from a suspension of relatively large particles.

@Amanda: I'm going to try Sahlep on my way home - it seems that there is a Turkish coffee shop I will walk past if I go only a slightly longer way home. Expensive drink though... $5.

Ir could be Hot Thai Milk Tea which is thickened with a jelly like a gel or jello type thickener. It is a popular drink in Thailand. I recent saw this drink on a Thai menu.

It could be chai. Actually chai can be made in a variety of ways. The type of barrel you mention does sound like cutting-chai. The specks could have been pista powder or cardomom powder. Not sure but this you can try at home with some very basic things.

For a cup of tea:
1 1/2 cup of water
Sugar 1 tsp but could be more if you like
loose tea powder (Taj Mahal from an Indian store?)
cardomom 2-3 pinch
cinnamon 1 pinch and ginger a pinch if you like
2-3 pinches pistachio powder
1/2 full cream milk

Boil the water with sugar, tea powder, cardomom, cinnamon and ginger. In the other vessel, heat the milk, add the pistachio powder, keep stirring till it becomes very thick, almost half of the original quantity.

Then once the tea decoction is strong enough that the spices give out the smell, pour the tea decoction in it with a sieve. Keep stirring this milk for a little while about 20-30 secs. And you have the chai ready.

Even if it is not the same drink you were looking for, this is a good drink.

Edit: I am not sure but yes, the tea decoction is strained with a sieve. You can try image search for cutting chai. The serving glasses are different.

Mate with milk ?

The flavor of brewed mate is strongly vegetal, herbal, and grassy, reminiscent of some varieties of green tea. Some consider the flavor to be very agreeable, but it is generally bitter if steeped in boiling water. Flavored mate is also sold, in which the mate leaves are blended with another herb (such as peppermint) or citrus rind.

In Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina, a toasted version of mate, known as mate cocido (Paraguay), chá mate (Brazil) or just mate, is sold in teabag and loose form, and served, sweetened, in specialized shops or on the street, either hot or iced with fruit juice or milk. The same is sold in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay in tea bags to be drunk as a tea.

Children often take mate with lemonade or milk.

where did you drink it?

Sahlep?

Sahlep tastes like very hot milkshake.
Ä°t's quite thick.
It has a distinctive smell.
There are particles in it.
