The Viet Minh was led by communists, but was composed of nationalist of varying political views from communist to centralist, and included Buddhist monks. The Viet Minh was the nationalist political movement whilst it was the "Peoples Army of Vietnam" (PAVN) who were the military arm. During the First Indochina War (War of Independence 1946 -1954) the communists amongst the PAVN was around 5-8%. Later, after Dien Bien Phu, it rose to over 10%
The PAVN was created in 1944 and trained and armed by the American OSS (forerunner of the CIA) to fight against the Japanese and Vichy French during WW-2.
