During the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, were the Vietminh who opposed the French comprised of strictly communist supporters or were there nationalists included in their army as well?

Great answers everyone and thank you. My view of it was that the Vietminh was comprised of mostly communist but also of nationalists who were NOT communists but wanted the French colonial rule and control out of Vietnam permanently. Thank you for correcting that.

The Viet Minh was led by communists, but was composed of nationalist of varying political views from communist to centralist, and included Buddhist monks. The Viet Minh was the nationalist political movement whilst it was the "Peoples Army of Vietnam" (PAVN) who were the military arm. During the First Indochina War (War of Independence 1946 -1954) the communists amongst the PAVN was around 5-8%. Later, after Dien Bien Phu, it rose to over 10%

The PAVN was created in 1944 and trained and armed by the American OSS (forerunner of the CIA) to fight against the Japanese and Vichy French during WW-2.

If you did not support the communists you were an enemy, Communism did not accept none believers to the cause.

Vietnamese Nationalists were anti Communist pro Colonial Vietnam, pro capitalist in nature, the cause the French Colonial days since it became a French Colony.

First, North Vietnam thought Khe Sanh was going to be America's Dien Bien Phu. They were badly mistaken.

If you mean, by nationalists, the national army of N. Vietnam or NVA, it was mostly an NVA operation. They were called Viet Minh at the time, they were not the same as the Viet Cong of South Vietnam later on. They were what were later referred to as NVA.

I'm not sure how you are making a distinction between communist forces and nationalist forces, they were the same thing. Nationalist forces were trying to form one Vietnam under communism.
